Antigua & Barbuda Leads the Way in Strategic Alignment of Education with the UWI Fund

The University Council of The University of the West Indies (UWI) has recently approved an important decision regarding the Open Campus.

Going forward, the Open Campus will be rebranded as the Global Campus, reflecting its expanding reach and global impact. One of the key initiatives that will emerge from the new Global Campus is the establishment of a for-profit entrepreneurial Business School called the International School for Development Justice (ISDJ). This innovative school will focus on generating income while aligning its activities with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The ISDJ will offer postgraduate academic programs delivered online, specifically tailored to address the SDGs.

By leveraging the expertise and excellence of the traditional Open Campus, the Global Campus aims to enhance and expand its operations throughout the Caribbean region. This significant transformation coincides with the University’s 75th Anniversary, a milestone that celebrates its longstanding commitment to serving the Caribbean community.

About the University of the West Indies

The University of the West Indies (UWI) has a rich history that began in 1948 when it started as a university college of London with just 33 medical students in Jamaica. Fast forward to today, and UWI has flourished into a prestigious institution that caters to over 50,000 students.

What sets UWI apart is its global presence and influence. With five regional campuses and ten global centers spread across North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, UWI has established itself as an exceptional global university deeply rooted in the Caribbean.

The recognition UWI has received speaks volumes about its academic excellence. In the recently released World University Rankings 2023, UWI proudly secured its place among the top 150 universities worldwide for research impact. Additionally, UWI maintains its position as the premier Caribbean university and continues to rank within the top 1% of Latin America’s finest institutions.

Antigua & Barbuda’s education-driven Citizenship by Investment Program

In 2019, the University Finance and General Purposes Committee (UF&GPC) gave the green light for the establishment of Five Islands Campus as The University of the West Indies’ (UWI) fifth campus and fourth landed campus. To finance this expansion, an innovative government-backed initiative called The UWI Fund was launched in May 2020, operating under Antigua & Barbuda’s citizenship by investment (CBI) program.

*Update: Since the MoA became effective in 2024, the new minimum contribution amount the the UWI Fund begins at US$ 260,000 – inclusive of the processing fees – for a family of 6.

A standout feature of the Antigua & Barbuda citizenship by investment program is the inclusion of a scholarship to the UWI. As part of the citizenship application, one family member will receive a one-year tuition-only scholarship, granting students the opportunity to receive a world-class education while immersing themselves in the culturally and vibrant environment of the Caribbean.

This forward-thinking initiative not only benefits individuals seeking citizenship but also contributes significantly to the growth and excellence of higher education in the region.

Synergy between Antigua & Barbuda CBI Program and UWI Fund

The partnership between the Antigua & Barbuda´s citizenship by investment program and the UWI fund exemplifies the government’s unwavering dedication to investing in education and empowering its citizens through knowledge. By offering a direct path to citizenship that supports higher education, this program not only enhances individual opportunities but also contributes to the long-term prosperity and advancement of the entire nation.

It serves as an example of how countries can come together in partnership to foster academic excellence and drive socio-economic growth. The UWI Global Campus plays a vital role as a regional institution, attracting students from across the Caribbean and beyond, fostering regional collaboration and cultural exchange. The global outreach and network of the Antigua & Barbuda CBI program further contribute to this goal, creating opportunities for enhanced cooperation and mutual development among nations.
