In a historic diplomatic breakthrough, Nigeria grants visa-free entry to St. Kitts and Nevis citizens, effective September 26, 2025. This makes St. Kitts and Nevis the first nation outside Africa and the first beyond the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to enjoy this privilege. Previously, only Cameroon and Chad held similar arrangements outside ECOWAS.
African-Caribbean Relations Strengthen
The decision is the direct outcome of the Afri-Caribbean Investment Summit (AACIS ’25), coordinated by Aquarian Consult Limited (ACL) under the leadership of Aisha Maina. With SKN as the focus country, the summit aimed to deepen Africa-Caribbean ties across trade, culture, and mobility.
During March 2025, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Prime Minister Terrance Drew of SKN held bilateral talks in Abuja. That same month, the first direct charter flight between Abuja and Basseterre carried 120 Nigerian delegates, symbolizing a new chapter of Afri-Caribbean cooperation.
St Kitts and Nevis and Nigeria Create a Platform for Trade and Culture
The partnership extends far beyond simplified travel:
- Business & Trade: The Afri-Caribbean Business Expo in Basseterre showcased opportunities in agribusiness, technology, and the creative economy.
- Agriculture: Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture, Abubakar Kyari, and SKN’s Minister of Agriculture, Samal Duggins, advanced discussions on food security and agricultural trade.
- Culture & Youth: St. Kitts and Nevis participated in the Olu of Warri’s coronation anniversary, while youth-led initiatives spotlighted emerging leaders from both regions.
Reciprocal Access
Nigerians already enjoy visa-free entry to St. Kitts and Nevis, making this a reciprocal agreement that strengthens mobility both ways. For Nigeria, it represents a strategic expansion beyond Africa; for SKN, it is another step in positioning itself as a bridge between Africa and the Caribbean. Preparations are now underway for AACIS ’26 in Abuja (March 2026), where stakeholders expect expanded outcomes in trade, investment, cultural diplomacy, and youth cooperation.
